Linux Red Hat Preps Linux OS Upgrade

Linux distributor Red Hat Inc. plans to debut an upgrade of its namesake operating system next week.

Red Hat Linux 6.1, scheduled to be unveiled Monday, will feature a streamlined installation, online software updates and enhancements for managing distributed computing architectures, according to company information.

Red Hat, which went public on Aug. 11, is one of several Linux vendors ramping up for the growing market.

One of Red Hat's chief competitors, Caldera Systems Inc., unveiled on Sept. 13 an enhanced version of its openLinux that provides for remote mass-installation capabilities, Y2K compliance and an improved Linux wizard. The Orem, Utah-based software company, which originally planned to go public in November, will now wait until after the first of the year, sources said.

As part of its two-pronged approach into the Linux arena, Corel Corp. last week released an upgrade to its Linux operating system to beta testers and said it is continuing discussions with hardware OEMs about bundling Corel's version of the open-source operating system on their machines.
