On the same day Major League Baseball opened its 2004 season, Sun Microsystems on Tuesday said it has reached agreement with MLB Advanced Media LP on a multimillion-dollar, two-year contract extension as the technology provider for baseball's Web site and associated services.
This will be the fourth season that Sun has served as the technology provider for MLB Advanced Media, the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball. MLB Advanced Media controls the MLB.com Web site--which provides interactive games, live TV and radio broadcasts, and statistical programs for baseball fans--and each of the 30 individual team Web sites.
As part of the deal, Sun will assist in the opening of a second data center for the Web site this year, with a third center planned for 2005, says Hal Stern, chief technology officer at Sun Services. "As part of baseball's effort to build a next-generation data center, we'll be involved in the design and putting into place a proactive and preemptive management and monitoring of their systems," Stern says.
The new data center in the New York metropolitan area will be built on Sun servers, storage devices, and the Java Enterprise System and will be based on Sun's Digital Asset Management Reference Architecture. It will be implemented and managed by Sun Services. The new infrastructure will support enhanced video content such as pitch-by-pitch view of games, pre- and post-game shows, analysis, and enhanced search capabilities--including archives of every at bat of each player.
