MCI WorldCom Enables ATM And Private-Line Services

MCI WorldCom today unveiled two Web-enabled offerings that let users more flexibly manage their asynchronous transfer mode and private-line services.

The carrier's Smart Bandwidth service lets IT managers establish connections to additional sites via any Web browser to cope with growth and disasters. The Web Digital Reconfiguration service lets users manage, construct, and configure 64-Kbyte and 1.54-Mbps private lines for similar situations.

MCI WorldCom executives say provisions connectability can be done in seconds--as opposed to days--without human intervention, but Berge Ayvazian, president of the Yankee Group, says the company essentially enhanced existing capabilities. "It looks like they are throwing a Web interface in front of capabilities they already have in the private-line area," he says, adding that the new ATM service is more advanced in its support of voice traffic.

Users pay for dynamically allocated bandwidth on an "as-used" or full-time basis. The services are available now, but pricing was unavailable.
