Re: An Important metric
Personally, that's pretty much how I deal with it too because none of the practices I visit use anything like this. However, as someone who's had quite a few MRIs and CT scans, I am concerned about my exposure and if a local facility gave me this option I would choose it over another. In fact, if I need another scan I will do some research to see if anyone within my area is proactive, like the Medical Center here. I can imagine if a patient battled a disease or condition where they required regular scans, this would be even more important. Or, as a parent, you'd want your child exposed to the minimal amounts and you'd want to carefully track this exposure over the kid's life.

Re: An Important metric
@Alison Generally, I just have to take my doctor's -- really more my dentist's -- word for it that the X-rays use less radiation than they have in the past due to the computer imaging technology use.  They don't get very specific about it, though.

Re: An Important metric
An interesting point that I didn't include in the article: Anecdotally, it's something at least some patients want to know. Dr. Shuman recalled one patient in particular who commented on the fact that his radiation exposure dropped year-over-year due to the provider's changes and monitoring. The patient was really appreciative of this and had made a point of bringing it up.

An Important metric
It's good to see that this critical, but oft-ignored parameter is starting to get the attention that it deserves. Yet another benefit made practical by electronic health records.
