Name is "Machine Learning," focus is a bit broader
Machine learning is one aspect of advanced analytics, but there's more to it than that. Despite the trendy-sounding name it's clear that Microsoft is treating this as an entry into the world of advanced analytics, not just machine learning, per se.

Re: Big Q's
Microsoft followed up after publicaiton to say it has "more than 300" algorithms, not "30 to 40" as I was told during an interview last week. As for those questions, Microsoft is nothing if not methodical. It does these private and public previews for months so it can work all the bugs out. What they are really trying to achieve with this pre-announcement of a preview is to get the partner network busy on developing models, predictive services and applications that will run on this service. That way once they do announce a generally available service, they'll be able to point to dozens or maybe even scores of industry- and domain-specific offerings that complement the generic service.

Re: Big Q's
Right, Doug, that partner network will be key. Can MS establish itself as a hub in this ecosystem?
