Still a hatefest
You make a really compelling case for why IT should take another look. However, I am not convinced that end users won't revolt even more now than pre-BYOD.

Can a wired VDI fit into a mobile world?
SSDs offer the prospect of rapid provisioning of thousands of desktops in a short space of time, especially if many of them are highly similar. But the day of VDI has been declared to have dawned so many times already, I'm still not sure it's here yet. VDI takes a lot of bandwidth, storage and server CPU, and meanwhile the end user devices keep getting less tethered and more mobile. VDI is still largely a wired affair. What happens when the user disconnects?

Re: Can a wired VDI fit into a mobile world?
That's a great point Charlie, and another chorus in the "why end users hate VDI" song. On the other hand, when is the last time you tried to work -- virtual desktop or no -- without a connection? Constant broadband connectivity is very doable in most urban areas. And, VDI vendors are working on this. Isn't VMware prepping a way to let users check out VMs for offline use?
