I guess if we all had to pay for twitter and facebook, etc. then no commerce, no ads, and a much smaller choice of social media. SiriusXM radio is $20 a month or so, no commercials, lots of programming. Would we pay for social media? How many of us pay for personal email?

I think looking at other people's better lives might have something to do with buying behavior in social media. -Or- it could be most of us just don't use social media correctly so we don't want to buy stuff ;)

I don't anticipate social sites getting rich off of this kind of scheme, but I bet over time more people will get used to buying stuff wherever: all platforms will eventually bend toward commerce.

And who knows, maybe Amazon will try and start a social media platform as a way to strike back.

It will be a big decision for facebook to try this, because if people get pissed off, it wont take much time for people to shift from one social media to another, orkut is an example. It would be better to keep a seperate tab for fb offers and shopping

I agree with what you said about impulse purchases. It seems like these are the ones they can capitalize on the most. The interface, at the moment, leaves much to be desired. I don't see myself buying anything using this, however.

On paper, it seems like a idea. Social media websites have attempted to raise revenue through ads and so the next step to take would seem to be to convert various sections into a webstore. Truth be told, I am not sold on the idea. I'd rather stick with Amazon for shopping, and Facebook for socializing. I could be wrong though, but I suppose we'll see if the idea takes off or not in the coming months.

I can see people making purchases via social media, especially if it's as streamlined as possible. You don't need to turn Facebook or Twitter into an online mall to make social purchases profitable: you just have to find ways to capture impulse purchases.

Does anyone really want to buy on social media?
The logic of connecting social media with commerce has always seemed sound, up to a point - people would be more likely to buy stuff they saw their friends buying, or just products easily accessible through a medium where many people spend a lot of time. Yet experiments with building shopping experiences, or whole online malls, into Facebook and other platforms have been going on for years. They never seem to have caught on all that much. Is there something about the mindset of social media interaction that doesn't put people in a mood to buy?
