@mak63: I did see many of these apps tended to be for iOS although I tried to find a mix for both platforms. In a search on Google Play, I came across several dog-whistle apps. Being the owner of two cats and zero dogs (and being an iPhone family), I can't attest to how well any of them work but they all appear to have reviews on them. That's a good question! But I figure if you're actually getting off the couch to walk Rover, then both you and your pooch are getting exercise. OTOH, if you merely attach one of these devices -- like the collar-tracker -- to your dog, open the back door and let him run around your yard while you watch the game on TV, then your puppy could well end up healthier than you!

"Killer pet owner" app is more like it. Seeing so many strays on the street is heartbreaking, so I second the vote on this app (although it probably will never see the light of day for many reasons.)

I'd love to get one of those, but all the sites/apps are for iOS. Has anyone tried something for android that works?

Waiting for the most useful app of all
And the "killer" pet app that is needed most of all is the one that sends a 1k volt of electricity shock via their smartphones to irresponsible owners who refuse to spay/neuter their pets.

what % of people downloading an app to improve their pet's fitness are themselves, ahem, "lacking" in fitness?

I may download Cornell's app for helping your pet maintain a good weight. One of our cats is, let's say, pleasantly plump. She's also extremely loud when her bowl is half full (guess Rina views it as half empty). So I'd also have to download a noise-canceling app to drown out her plaintive wails and a virtual blindfold to avoid her green-eyed stare as she followed me around the house, mewling pitifully for more food.

I couldn't find one -- although some of the GPS vendors primarily targeting dogs claim their products are suitable for cats (these are the smaller devices that clip on collars). However, they don't meet all your criteria: All the ones I found did have a monthly fee. Your idea makes sense. When I owned indoor/outdoor cats (as opposed to our current indoor-only cats), a device like that would have been wonderful -- and avoided one lsemi-feral rescue cat who disappeared one day.

The one obvious device no one seems to has developed is a GPS tracking device for cats that's small enough not to be a burden but has enough battery power to run a transmitter, and doesn't require a monthly subscription fee.
