Hi David, Thanks for the write up on our session. Nike Corp. has received lots of exposure on their BYOD program which is currently 100% iPhones. I agree with you that the iPhone may fade in prominence, but when companies plan to depend on user self-support via forums, wikis, whatever, there is no other brand that has the same die-hard advocates as Apple. The more devices that are allowed, the smaller the knowledge-base per device.

Enterprises are going to have to accept that there will be requirement for supporting end-users unless they want them to not be able to work. I do like your idea of at least offering one phone with hard-keys and you are right that there are a lot of folks who do not want to be responsible for a fragile device.

Even if companies "just" give everyone an iPhone, the issue still remains of what end users put on that iPhone--whether it is the company's or their own. I also agree with your comment, David, that the iPhone may not remain the "it" phone forever. It wasn't very long ago that the BlackBerry was the device of choice for corporate use and end users were sneaking iPhones in through the back door.

Although I find the "just buy everyone and iPhone" policy amusing, I'd tend to recommend offering at least one more choice -- like the option of either a BlackBerry or an Android model with a keyboard for those who still don't like typing on-screen.

It strikes me as foolish to believe that everyone will want an iPhone, popular though it may be, or that the iPhone will remain the top object of desire indefinitely. Without Steve Jobs as benevolent (?) dictator, Apple may lose its edge, or someone else may come up with something sexier, hard though that may be to believe at the moment.

David, thanks for the compelling summary of your time at Enterprise Connect. ItG«÷s interesting to hear that companies are leaning toward providing their employees with iPhones. It does seem like the best alternative to provide a desired, but also corporate-owned device to employees. We all know that Apple products have more prominence in the enterprise than ever before, and here at LifeSize (www.lifesize.com), weG«÷ve certainly recognized this trend and have worked to be sure our offerings are available on all iOS devices, including iOS 5.1 and the new iPad. WeG«÷ll be very interested to watch and see if companies follow the trend youG«÷ve outlined. Thank you for your insight.
