Re: Tablets stuck in gray area
It is funny isn't it. Everytime a new technology comes along it feels like it's going to replace the laptop and in reality, that old stalwart keeps on kicking while the likes of netbooks and now it seems, tablets, fall slowly by the wayside or find a niche usage.

Re: Tablets stuck in gray area
Truth is people arent using tablet as much as they thought they would. Our phones are our daily devices. The ones that we instinctively reach for. The size of tablets is both a blessing and a curse, making them better for some things but also less easy to handle. The things that they are the absolute best for are things like watching TV on long trips. And I agree. They are great at that. But for most of us there aren't all that many of them. Commuting to work for most of us is time when we are working, not watching stuff, and we either do it through out phones benefiting from the direct connection to all our communications channels and well practiced thumb typing, or we bring laptops and benefit from their complete operating system

I dont get that Apple really thought that people would replace their iPad every 2 years. It's not a phone that has a contract and they are not cheap.

Re: Tablets stuck in gray area
If you look at the CPU power curve from the original iPad to the iPad Air 2, you can see that each generation offers substantial speed improvements. Once your iPad is more than one generation old, you'll notice the lack of zip, particularly when installing a new, larger operating system. I think Apple will get the upgrades over time, at least for a few years. But at some point, you can't make them any thinner and Moore's Law is already under strain.

Tablets stuck in gray area
The problem is iPads work too well. If Apple really wants to boost tablet sales it'll need to make iPads get lethargic after two years. But be subtle about so users don't cry foul. Even Apple fanboys who crave the latest and greatest aren't willing to upgrade their expensive iPad if it works just fine.
