re: Is Gamification A Great Motivator?
Deb - interesting piece. To add an additional comment to the commenter above, I think the key element is that these "games" are wrapped around activities that A) drive business value by way of making you more productive, efficient, etc. and B) are activities you would be performing during the normal course of your workday anyway. So the "games" are running in the background (and certainly not impeding any work or collaboration). That's the ideal scenario. I've seen too many companies go about the games in a way that starts to deviate from "actual work".

Thank you so much for the comment, and I think I know what you mean. Not everyone is incented by competition--either with themselves or with others. I think you're right, too, that some apps look "aracade-y" while in others the games mechanics are more subtle.

re: Is Gamification A Great Motivator?
If you don't like playing games and the application looks and "plays" like a game, it can be extremely irritating. The game can get in the way of the technology you're trying to teach. I have experienced some of the game-enabled tech already. It can be annoying especially when you've mastered a step and need to get past it and the game structure won't let you advance.
