The themes on how to buy
There are a few underlying themes here:

1. Don't buy someone a gift unless they're likely to be passionate about it (wearables)

2. Don't buy cheap versions of items that people really want (drones, phones, bluetooth speakers, etc.). Stick with quality.

3. Don't buy tech that's unnecessary/obviated/redundant (dockables, digital picture frames, etc.)

4. Don't buy tech that's more trouble than doing the job yourself (vacuum/mop bots). Besides, you need the exercise or could hire somebody who needs the work.

What does this say about me?
I didn't score so well as a recipient, according to Doug's take. Recent birthday gifts: a Fitbit Flex wristband and a cheap bluetooth speaker. But I gotta say, I like em both.

Good advice, Doug
"Have a happy Thanksgiving, and do yourself a favor: Spend more time with family and friends than shopping carts this season."

I wish people would refuse to shop on Thanksgiving so that retail employees could take that advice. I plan to boycott stores that opened on the holiday. Shop local where you can, and if you must go to a chain, consider the list below. Hi, Neiman Marcus.

Here is a FB site dedicated to that cause - it keeps a "naughty and nice" list.

Photo: Updated 11/24/14: CHANGE: Modell's has been added to the Naughty list. Save this list to your phones, share it, print it... and remember to SHOP NICE!!
