Stupid software
Good point that we are under much more of a threat from stupid software than super-intelligent software.

Re: Stupid software
David,

While the threat of Stupid Software(or shall I say Dumb Software mistakes made by Developers) can't be understated neither can we understate the Threat of Super-intelligent Nationstate Software .

Have you heard of Operation Aurora?

What about SOMALGET?

More Information can be found HERE-https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2014/12/04/nsa-auroragold-hack-cellphones & https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2014/05/19/data-pirates-caribbean-nsa-recording-every-cell-phone-call-bahamas

These are clearly threats which can't be understated today.

Can they?

Influenza deaths
The article says:

"A 2010 study estimated that there were somewhere between 3,000 and 49,000 flu-related deaths in the US from the 1976-1977 flu season to the 2006-2007 flu season."

That is 3,000 to 49,000 deaths PER YEAR, not over the whole time period of the study.

Re: Stupid software
Quite a logical and compelling argument the author makes.....but that is the problem. It is linear logical thinking bound within a current paradigm. Brilliant People like Hawking and Musk are not constrained in this manner. I won't be around to worry about it, but I certainly entertain the very distinct possibility that these two have accurately synthesized exponential thinking in many emerging technologies to predict this outcome.

Re: Stupid software
It is my belief that some scientists and innovators are living in a world completely different than regular people. It is very clear that our current world and population are facing some real threats which are impact the quality of live not just of the U.S, but of the world.  We should focus our energies to reduce such problems.  The issue is that people with innovative ideas and money are focusing on imaginative threats such as trying to project the world form evil AI.  These are first world problems like weird al yankovic will say
