Molina Healthcare Looks To Hyper-Converged Infrastructure
With all the endless amounts of new network and storage appliances coming out these days, and with each one having a new nomenclature or buzzword attacheed to it for lord knows what reason, many may justifiably wonder what the actual differences between these products are, where the cost savings lie, and when all the terminology devolves into just being marketing hype. It's good news, then, that it sounds like Nutanix has developed a product with marked differences from it's peers, a real use case for companies of Molina's size, and measurable benefits and drawbacks (in the form of cost) from traditional infrastructure options. I appreciate the legwork you've done on this one, Charlie, and I suspect even non-techies would be able to grasp the benefits of what's going on here from how you've described it,

I mention cost as the primary drawback of using appliances like this, and it is commonly accepted that that's the case, but it sounds like Mr. Blace is pretty confident that that money's coming back to him sooner rather than later. He makes some pretty compelling points. The additional cost of the hardware is one-time, but the licenses being saved on are presumably recurring. Those higher utilization rates also mean that even though you're paying more 'per gigabyte', you're essentially getting to use more versus buying the same amount of traditional storage, somewhat equalizing that cost differential. Add in what is hopefully high-quality dedicated support from Nutanix, further saving on the overhead costs IT has to endure, and it's not hard to see how this could be a great buy. He mentions saving on not hiring new IT staff, but those savings may mean different things for different businesses.

Hyper-converged infrastructure: more work in less space
Ryan Blace netted out the advantage of hyper-converged infrastructure as leading to higher utilization of key resources, such as RAM and solid state disk, in balance with available CPU. CPU usage was lower than the 75% of memory usage in his shop because his claims applications use lots of data for the amount of processing required. He doesn't mind lots of headroom on available CPU. Molina provided no estimate of actualy CPU usage levels.
