Re: Competition
One big question is how valuable a platform for IoT is -- are you just buying the table stakes functionality for an industry, like the insurance example, or are you buying somethig that can help you set youreself apart from rivals?

IoT tied into big data analytics
IBM will tie large scale IoT data collection into big data analytics, trying to get to the business value of all that data. Others will also, but it has a lot of experience in getting different systems and data types to work together.

Re: Competition
I think this marks IBM's first proper entry into the IoT domain and does give a lot of hopes about what the future may hold for us. Given the strong brand image that IBM has and a legacy for being a technology leader, this project may prove to be a huge sucess for the overall IoT industry and may end up boosting the overall development in the IoT world.

Competition
Microsoft and Amazon are going to respond – and they have been able to successfully court thrid party developers to a larger degree than IBM.

I think this is a logical push for big blue. I'm acutally surprised it took so long – what was the delay in launching a unit like this?
