Wow, I guess I'm one of the sheep
I'm all in on Google and have been for a while: long time Gmail user, Chrome user and Android phone user. Every once in a while I wake up in a cold sweat wondering what would happen if Google went all evil-genius and started doing something nefarious with their power. Lucky I am a long time stock holder too so hopefully I will benefit if they hatch some wierd scheme to take over the world.

@progman2000: I don't know if they ever will, but I am more concerned about data security Google has always been keen on developing. Gmail does not have the best defences but oh well it is the first thing that comes to mind when we speak of an email account.

@progman2000   Sounds like you are sitting pretty, and were smart to hedge your bet.  I am all Google and Android myself, and I figure I have already been compromised.

Just wish I would have bought stock though.

Re: Wow, I guess I'm one of the sheep
Yeah well, as is typical with my stock buying skills, I originally bought it right before a big tech stock correction so it was a big loser for me for a long time. It has more than made up for it though and has doubled my initial investment (I have had it a while though). They are just one of those companes (IMO) that rarely ever make a bad decision. I usually dump stock when it starts going south but with that one you just know it was going to come roaring back.

Still doesn't mitigate the fact that I am a little concerned that they know EVERYTHING about me. Between knowing what you search for on the internet, what kind of emails you are sending/receiving, where you are driving to on a daily basis, and who you talk to on the phone - is there anything they don't know about you? Scary when you think about it.

More Data of Gmail
It would be great to get some more precise data on Gmail. How many are "free" accounts and are actually in use? How many are paid business accounts? How many are part of the Google Apps pricing.

Re: More Data of Gmail
@jastroff: I don't think you would ever come to know that because I think that kind of information is confidential. Like I would give you a number of my customers but wouldn't tell you how many of them get better priviledges.

Re: More Data of Gmail
That actually kind of surprises me - they haven't said how many of their users are part of their paid application pricing? Doesn't sound like a big leap to me, they are a public company after all, that info must be out there somewhere?

@jastroff     I was thinking along the same lines - Knowing that people do tend to have multiple accounts which of course will skew the numbers some.

Google's Gmail: Numbers Don't Lie ......

"....there are 900 million users on Gmail."

Thanks Kelly, it is nice to get some real numbers on the number of people using gmail.  Even though it doesn't surprise - it really does.

Not accurate, no way to verify
900 million is a bit inflated, in my opinion, primarily because I'm willing to bet some of those emails belong to the same person.  I have several gmail addresses myself.

The number is inflated, for sure, and a breakdown of types of IDs would be useful. I was wondering...why did Amazon not go into the email business? Everyone else seems to be in it

Re: Not accurate, no way to verify
@jastroff - Hmmmm...I never thought about Amazon going into the email biz before - I'm guessing they don't see great profit margins to be had from it, but you would think there's something to be gained by millions of people owning an @amazon address.

Re gmail - I have about 10 different gmail accounts for spam or junk mail that I never check.  I made a gmail account for my mom to use so she could get a facebook account without using her "real" email address (so all her cooky old friends can't stalk her all day long) :)

It would be nice to see how many "true" users exist.

@jastroff,

I think that for Amazon to also enter, not a crowded market but more of a stuff one, would be difficult to compete.

The thing about gmail that I love is that it's both simple and insanely effective at managing emails. This is to the point that I now many smallbusiness owners that have there business mails based on gmail, and actually prefer going to gmail.com website to view and manage there emails versus outlook only because they don't have to worry about crashing.

And I have to admit, Gmail is constantly getting better, to the point that for non-power users, it really does suffice.

One more comment. One killer feature that gmail has that I wish Outlook had is custom tags. It would be so increase my productivity if I could tag emails based on keywords, and then simply do a search to look them up versus creating subfolders (which we all know you can easilly misplace that email that had the link that you need)

Inbox
GMAIL is way better than Outlook. Inbox is way better than GMAIL. Kudos to Google.

My Outlook for Office still crashes once a week if not more.

Outlook, like most Microsoft products, is still living in 2010 pro-desktop pre-Web era.
