iPad sliding down
I am very surprised that the sales of iPad is decreasing. I would purchase an iPad, before I would purchase an iPhone. I guess I am not a part of the majority, when it comes to the iPad versus the iPhone. Apple's watch is not even on my radar.

iPad potential is missing
Most people think of the iPad as just an entertaining device. A few see the potential it has as a working tool, which is a pity since it works great for those who need to be on the road often, or even use it instead of the Mac in plenty of opportunities. The iPad Pro with the multitasking feature will be great for those of us who love the iPad already as a working tool. -Susan

The article explains why the iPad is slumping in sales and will continue to flatline. The entire segment is dropping in volume. Competitors have found some ways to differentiate themselves from Apple in the tablet space, namely with usable pen/stylus input (something still lacking on the iPad) and the cross-over form factor in the Surface Pro and Surface 3 devices. The iPad won't disappear, but it isn't likely to see the kind of huge year-over-year growth that it experienced in the past.

@jaggibbons: but you cannot overlook the huge impact iPad has had in 2014. Most smartphones are eating into the tablet space because of their immense size. Including Apple's own iPhone. I think iPads need to have a design change that is radical.

@susan I agree. IPad is the ultimate working tool. You need to get things done? Use an iPad. IPads working logic is based on the fact that it only motivates you to waste your time when you have it, and the services and ui design aid this factor.

Could be. On the one hand, a "radical design change" could boost the market by developing a new niche like the iPad did back when it debuted. On the other hand, a "radical design change" could change the fundamental definition of an iPad. Either way, real growth is around changing the business case or changing the device to fit a new market segment. The current market is saturated.

Your comment is spot on in what I think is what most consumers thinks, specially business users.

I do also agree that the current market is saturated, and as mentioned in the article, folks aren't swapping there tablets every 6 months to a year versus there smartphone counterparts.

I myself have 2013 nexus 7, and aside from a bigger screen, I really don't have any reasons to upgrade/get a new one.

I do think that bigger screen Ipad might have a good impact, since it's one of the appeals to Window's Sufarce 3 and it's 12 inch display (which is phenomenal). It would be interesting to see how consumers react since the way tablets are handled and it's portable will definitly change.

Many industries do you Ipads as a portal system for there business. Many restaurants use it. Disney for example uses ipads for both POS systems both at the theme parks and for guess check in/check out.

To add to your comment...as mentioned in the article, "The tablet market is hit by fewer new buyers, extended life cycles and little innovation to encourage new purchases,"

I think this says it all.... simply put the cycle at which folks get tablets is very similar to PCs, where you would refresh your laptop every 2 to 5 years (depending on the user and needs of course)
