I think what you are seeing with Microsoft is the company playing catch-up, but not in the way it had done previously, when it was chasing whatever trend happened to be there. By focusing more on core IT -- cloud, mobility, enterprise apps, the company is back to where it started and is trying to leverage what it has into new fields. I think also you see that the company has accepted that iOS and Android are the two dominant platforms now and that it's better to get Office onto them now, instead of trying to convert everyone over to Windows Phone. At least in the short-term, you have a foothold while you try to bring the phone OS up-to-date.
