Line
Line is the best alternative I have found, plus it has lots of neat things like albums, ability to save important parts of convos, edit images etc. My son moved to Japan and initially I used it because he preferred it but since that time I've found many friends on it and we use it as a Skype alternative because it's one of the few that is equally great on desktop as well as mobile.

Re: Google Voice
I haven't tried it, but Ekiga still looks like a viable alternative.  It will even do the VOIP to telephone service thing.

Re: Google Voice
Thank you for the alternatives, they are great. I think Google phone can be use for professionals. If I do not want to give my phone to people at networking events, I can always give them my Google phone, get back to them that way. I used Google phone when I travel abroad because I can call my family easily with only a WIFIconnection.  I can talk and see my family using facetime.

Re: Google Voice
@TomDausy "Worth mentioning that Google Voice is now fully integrated within Google Hangouts"
Yes, since last year if I'm not mistaken, I still use Voice for texts though, and Hangouts Dialer for phone calls. You can't beat free!

Re: Google Voice
Google Voice has been out for years. I've been using it since Google bought GrandCentral. I believe, I've been using it for more than 5 years already.
Nowadays, I use Hangouts Dialer to make phone calls (US calls only). Whatsapp for intenational calls (not bad really), and of course, Voice and Whatsapp for chat and txt.
What I like to see is a comparison between Line vs. WeChat. My family and friends are stuck in Skype, but I'd like to give'em both a try. I like the Shake function. Sounds fun.

You forgot the BBM!!!
BBM is cross platform that allows video, IM and also content sharing across multiple platforms - iOS, Android, Windows and of course Blackberry where it all started.
