Hm... Use Google+ Hangouts. More functionality, less limitations, and open to anyone with a Gmail account.

Really simple. If you don't like what AT&T is doing, just use another carrier. Yes, there are alternatives and just because you might not like them doesn't mean they don't exist.

Besides, why on earth would Apple uses worry about costs? Think about it.
