This is the real hinge on which actual reform turns: gimme my damn data. Add price transparency to the data access, and we'll have some REAL change.

I agree that government finally got something right with the Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements to allow patients timely access to their health information, although as stated, it may be a little short sided to only focus on the required metrics and not think long-term to using it to gain patient engagement and ultimately, their trust. This may be limited by the current set of available tools, and it's promising to know that there are upcoming developments in that arena; the idea of Allscripts crowd-sourcing solutions in their Open App Challenge at Health 2.0 is a great step in the right direction.

This line of thought is self-interested and misguided. Patient engagement begins in a trusting, empathic doctor-patient relationship. There is no app, no cool technology, informational or otherwise, that can remediate a bad patient experience with her / his healthcare provider(s).
