Depending on the size of the organisation and your overall business objective, you cal listen, monitor or engage. Check out Webfluenz (http://webfluenz.com/)which is another uber cool tool that goes one step beyond listening and monitoring. Identify influencers who have a deep impact on conversations pertaining to you and engage with them directly!

For anyone looking in to purchasing a social media monitoring or 'social listening' platform, just remember what you're getting: the ability to listen to and engage with people who are talking about your brand in the social web. You'll probably get cool charts, nice graphics, and some sort of dashboard showing you whose talking and where. However, remember what you WON'T get:

How these social mentions actually impact your business and how you can learn from the underlying trends to increase business revenue in the long run.

Just remember that the goal of any business is to make money. Any investment you make (including in social media tools) should increase revenue for your business in the long run. Can a social media monitoring tool guarantee a substantial increase in revenue for your company by telling you how cool it is that people are talking about you? No, they can't.

To answer these underlying questions and understand the motivations behind why people say what they say online, you need a combination of the best technology on the market, the right expertise to guide you through the complex trends and patterns, and the right plan to successfully integrate these tools in to your existing business processes.

If you think you're gonna buy one of these tools and money is going to rain down from the sky because you can see whose chattering about your brand online, think again.

For small businesses, the point about "listening" versus "monitoring" is especially crucial. Maximizing the value of a small business owner's social media marketing will require him/her to actively listen to social conversations and then to respond accordingly. Simply monitoring social media will not generate the volume of customer leads and increased customer engagement that a small business is hoping to achieve based on time spent.

Most of these solutions want to measure my personal Facebook and LinkedIn accounts, rather than the organization pages that I administer. Any suggestions for measuring just the organizational stuff?
