re: Medical Devices Neglected In EHR Chase: Report
Not only do EHR's need an ability to take in data from devices, some also need an ability to control devices (such as infusion pumps).

re: Medical Devices Neglected In EHR Chase: Report
Standardization (and standards in general) is THE key to interoperability between devices and systems. The Healthcare industry is severely lacking in this area. The major information repositories are emerging in the form of EHR systems. These have to be able to talk to each other for information to flow. Right now, to a large degree, they don't. HL7 is the current messaging protocol to get data in and out of a given system. And, it takes a custom interface on each endpoint to exchange that data. There has to be a better way or it will be an uphill battle for a long time to come.

Speaking of the FDA - and maybe I'm being a bit harsh here - but they seem to be part of the problem and not of the solution. For instance, we have a software vendor that could not legally run their application (Dicom viewer) on Windows 7 until the FDA approved it for that platform. It took them nine months to finally get there. This is fully three years after Windows 7 hit the market. And, the vendor claims the delay was because of the FDA dragging its feet.

That kind of slow response (no matter who is at fault) precludes anyone from remaining technologically "current"...
