With many of the EHR systems out there we are at least seeing a lot more doctors e-prescribing, which in turn provides pharmacies with real time information. With many of these systems as well, alerts are and can be put in place so that the physician can be more aware of potential abuse by their patients. I do agree that there needs to be a national standard when it comes to Medication control, much like in most healthcare standards.
