Yeah, any time people talk about opportunities for insurance companies, there's a good bet its will be better for providers than drivers. Even so, a lot of this works out well for everyone. If my car can eventually monitor its own health, I suspect I'll take better care of it, that it will last longer, and that total cost of ownership will come down. Depending how intelligent a "smart" cars' self-diagnostics truly become, motorists could even be better equipped to know what kind of service is worth paying for, and what kind of service is being offered by an overeager/ incorrect/ exploitative mechanic. I can see why some people don't want iOS-style apps in their car, but even if you fall into this category, the benefits of smarter vehicles are pretty compelling.

As Nate suggested, coudn't this service also be integrated with the driver's insurance company to facilitate the processing of claims (in case of an accident or damage), potentially also to share info about behavior and actions that might affect th driver's insurace premiums? I'm not sure what the value would be but it also conceivably could be integrated with the bank/lender that is financing the car, perhaps to facilitate payments, cross-selling, etc. Might be better for the providers tha the drivers, ttho.

Sprint has been pushing usage-based auto insurance big time over the past couple years. There are definitely some opportunities for insurance companies to leverage this platform for new usage-based programs Gă÷ did they mention that?
