Ah, the Congressional hearing soundbite. So many cameras, so little time...so little substance or effort.

The wasteful beaurocracy will surely get worse under Obamacare. It's frightening to think that our health will be in the hands of these idiots

Mr. Kash writes, "If lawmakers are truly intent on helping agencies buy and manage IT more effectively ..."

That's a big "IF." With $80 billion to carve out into pork for their districts, and with data being instantly accessible no matter where the data center resides, my guess is that the last thing some lawmakers want to do is to help government IT be more effective.

You're right. That's a big IF. I'm not optimistic. The report we've yet to see (if some has seen it, let us know) is one showing a breakdown of data center closures by Congressional district.

Nice piece Wyatt! Of course, the Hill's gap in knowledge has become a management capability issue in trying to legislate IT management practices. At the heart of the issue is that government cannot separate the IT from the operations. IT spending goes up and down with numbers of government programs. Cutting the number of programs seem the only way to get IT spending to go down...but it worries me that this is not really the issue. The real issue is how to get government more effective and efficient, and that probably means that government programs need to better use technology...not use less technology or data centers.

Points well taken! And you would know more than most. Fewer, better programs using more, not less tech, would in most cases improve service as well as IT spending efficiency. Thanks for weighing in.
