FUD is very powerful. Whilst an in-sourced IT function can offer certain individuals a lot of longer term opportunities, highly capable people know that their skills are in demand and may choose to be in control of their own destiny. The period following major change such as M&A, in-sourcing and out-sourcing are very stressful.

One comment I would make is that major initiatives such as projects or insourcing can result in an abnormal spike in workforce. Efforts should be made to accelerate the process of helping new hires settle in - staff social functions or a fun day can go a long way to breaking the ice.

At the very least, an induction process that involves new IT hires spending some time on the 'shop floor' makes a huge difference.

Would love to hear about the risks associated with commercializing and monetizing in-house products. A number of healthcare organizations I've spoken to are in the process of taking their in-house tech to the market, and I'm sure that process can be complicated to navigate.

I've seen that people behave in odd ways especially during a change of this magnitude. At my previous client, internal employees started leaving as they were not sure where they would fit in the new organizational model. Some supplier personnel left as staffing companies pursued them diligently. Given the skills of these people (healthcare/Epic), they are in high demand and other organizations were paying unusually high salaries in the bay area.

I'm surprised to see attrition high on this list -- why would people flee a company because it's hiring a lot of people?
