What's sparking these 'seemingly contradictory alliances'? One word. Licensing. 95% of the cloud infrastructure or Virtual Data Centre providers I've spoken to fumble and stumble as soon as you mention Oracle, simply because of the licensing model.

Done right, "the cloud" isn't a competitor in database or applications. It's a hunk of remote hardware, available to anybody who wants to use it. Excluding yourself from that hardware due to competitive labels means missing some potential customers who want to use it.
