Looking at the economic impact: The shutdown reportedly cost $1.6 billion last week in lost economic output, according to IHS Inc. (IHS), a Lexington, Mass.-based global market-research firm. The shutdown is draining an average of $160 million each workday from the $15.7 trillion economy. By yesterday, the cost was expected to surpass $2 billion -- putting a Washington-made calamity on par with the hit incurred last month in Colorado, with its flash floods and mudslides across 17 Colorado counties.

re: Federal Shutdown: We Miss Our Data
As the late fire season approaches, Californians are missing the 2,000 Air National Guard technicians and their data with which they maintain the air tankers and helicopters used in fighting wild fires. They've all been furloughed. The Santa Ana winds have begun to stir, which sometimes force fires down out of the foothills into populated areas along the coast. Aircraft that are not up to a certain level of constant maintenance, by the book, are not allowed to fly. Some commentators see few adverse consequences in the shutdown. We'll see.
Thank you to the individual who noted that the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which provides GDP data and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which provides unemployment and other data, have also suspended operations during the shutdown. Story was updated and corrected 10/10/13
Fair point. As it is now, those security concerns are worth heeding. But in the long run, as organizations move away from copying data, and ingesting data directly from sources like the government, the concern is that more private sector services/apps will face the risk of having to post a message saying, "Sorry, due to the government shutdown, our service is temporarily unavailable." Can't image customers/shareholders will take too kindly to that.

re: Federal Shutdown: We Miss Our Data
As our columnist (and city CIO) Jonathan Feldman pointed out, some of the sites have security worries during the shutdown. We may want the data but that want may not outweigh the security worries.

re: Federal Shutdown: We Miss Our Data
At some point, though, a shutdown *should* be painful. Heck, do a full shutdown, make it hurt everyone. Start cherry-picking and eventually the anarchists win.
