I don't see that, if it's an opt-in thing. As the article points out, it's likely to be customer services organizations who are active on Twitter, journalists looking for tips, and others who want more contact rather than less who will switch it on. If you don't want to be contacted by anyone outside of your network. leave it turned off.

Exactly. I imagine any high-profile Tweeter won't want to, because if you look at what people say publicly to some celebrities, letting them get that direct channel in private seems sort of like installing a urinal in your living room.

As long as the individual Twitter user gets to decide whether to enable this feature, this is a nice option. From the headline, I was worried that they were going to make this the default.

I'll probably turn this on, as long as I have the option to turn it off again later in the event of tweet spam.
