re: Motorola's Project Ara Promotes Modular Smartphones
Android users I know love that they can customize their phones to suit their personal tastes. Given that, I feel like making hardware customizable is a logical next step - and could easily prove popular. The early designs on Motorola's blog look pretty cool too.

re: Motorola's Project Ara Promotes Modular Smartphones
The problem is what to do with all that space. Handheld devices are about as small as a hand can hold. Meanwhile, Moore's Law continues to release, space, power and cooling constraints. Why not build in component choice ala Gateway's PCs into modular devices that don't become obsolete and can change as users develop new hobbies e.g. photography or get better peripherals like Bluetooth connected Bose Speakers.
