I think these initiatives show the government's recognition of the importance of big data. As we've seen with the adoption of electronic health records, if the government gets behind a technology initiative, it can really take off. Government backing is an important first step in the development of private sector big data projects.

Great News
By combining hundreds or thousands of research projects, healthcare scientists and analysts are already finding some fascinating data that should save or improve lives. In addition to addressing 'big name' diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinsons, I've read about how some big data work has already helped with advances in fibromyalgia and migraines, for example. Combine big data with advances such as IBM Watson, and the medical profession could be in for some real groundbreaking advances.
