Re: What Microsoft PR said Monday morning
Take a look at my situation if you would: I was 5th in line at 7:00am in Oak Brook, IL.

Then, the manager (?) posts this sign.

After he saw me taking a picture of his posted sign, he came to the door. According to him, they gave away vouchers (they said wristbands) for the "20 people standing in line at 2am" ... in other words, they gave them away to their friends to resell for profit after tipping them off to be there at 2. Thanks Microsoft.

The sale was supposed to start at 10am; whoever was there, reaps the reward. I was there. My girlfriend was there. And 3 others were too. Microsoft, or at the very least this manager, screwed us all.

I am complaining about the retail store. I went to the microsoft store located at twelve oaks mall in Novi, MI and I was the 12th person in the line. However, after 5 or 6 people purchased, the staff told us all the venue 8 at $99 have been sold out? I remembered that each people can only buy one and the store should offer 20. The only thing I can imagine is that the store employees purchased them for themselves or for their relatives or friends in advance. That is totally unacceptable!...one thing is for sure, that i will never purchase a microsoft product ever again!

Fake Sale
gotta call BS on this. @ 20 per store times about 60 MS retail stores + just 100 on line sales, that totals only about 1300 units to be sold everywhere at this $99 teaser price. the real sale price is the $199 "while supplies last." but then, maybe that's enough to meet demand after all ...

we're seeing almost all tablets getting big holiday sale price chops now. the Race To The Bottom is on! all except iPads that is. gee, maybe that is significant?

Pissed
I also tried to make a purchase, but the Microsoft Page would not load. Kept getting a "Place holder Error File"
I kept trying and trying. Then the price of $199.00 came up!
I knew it was a shot in the dark to get on at the $99.00 price, but thought I would at least get a shot!
A crashed or not responding website is NOT a shot and is not fair to the people that were trying to get that price!

I called the sales/support number:  877-696-7786 and talked to a "Michael". He would NOT give me his last name, (ok, I understand this) but he would NOT give me his employee number. I wanted to make sure I had this information for follow up.
He said that the $99.00 sale was for the 1st 100 people, I said that I understand that, but people should at least be able to get to the website. He did not care, said that there was noting that he could do.

I asked to speak with his supervision, he refused to let me talk to him. I was shocked! He then said that his supervisor was not in. I asked for his supervisors name, again. He again would not give it to me. He said that his supervisor would only tell me the same thing. I asked him who he was to make the decision for his supervisor. He would not give me the supervisors name, at all. He said that I could call back (the number I called). I said and talk to who???
He said whoever answered the call.  This is BS! He never did give me the name, then "ended the call"
Again, this is BS as I would have at least expected to be able to connect to  Microsoft to at least have a chance to get the deal!

NOT HAPPY!!!

What Microsoft PR said Monday morning
Okay, if anyone visited a retail location and was told that there were never any $99 units available, I suggest you call the store and demand an explanation. Below is what I was just emailed by Microsoft PR, in response to the conflicting reports that have floated around this morning:

"With each of the 12 Days of Deals, the daily doorbuster is for the first 20 customers in line. So today, the Dell Venue 8 Pro Tablet was/is $99 for the first 20 customers and $199 thereafter until supplies last.

Tomorrow, customers can get a Garmin Forerunner 110 Fitness watch plus a $25 gift card for $129.99 as supplies last. The daily doorbuster for the first 20 customers inside the store is the Garmin Fitness Watch and $25 gift card for $99.99.

All Microsoft retail stores are going live with these deals each day until the 20th and all  store managers can speak to them."

So there you have it.

Site back to normal
Just ordered mine. Deal is back up for $199 without any crazy traffic it seems. Hurry and get yours. Says sold out under the 12 day deals tab but if you manually search for the dell venue 8 pro it says $199 with add to cart available. Order went through smoothly.

Re: Deal Stolen By Bots
Of course it's stealing.  Did this article mentions the fact that you need specialized software to qualify for this deal?  Nope.  Did any other mention it?  Did any Microsoft press releases mention it?  Nope.

You're competing against people who read these articles and honestly think that they have a chance at the sale.  That's obviously wrong and you all know it.

That's like going to a physical store with a Black Friday sale, seeing the 100 people who have been in line for days, and cutting to the front of the line.  Just because you know you can get away with it doesn't make it right.  Because everyone you cut in front of is your victim.  You should be ashamed.
