Definitely a step in the right direction, but the low percentages of those impacted are most likely correct. There are too many non-Google clients being used. How many corporate Outlook clients are also used for personal gmail accounts?

@ Thomas Claburn, you are right but caution is always the better course whether we cover computer security or not.Especially in today's world when we are increasingly haunted by various kinds of security and privacy breachesevery day.It just keeps surprising me knowing the different ways our personal information can be collected.

This is a very good move indeed by Google. It is commendable that Gmail is trying to take some of the security load off the users' shoulders who are constantly being worried of getting malwares from multiple sources. This step will also serve Gmail retain the users' confidence which has been shaken lately by concerns about privacy.

This sounds like a pretty fair move. I like the promotions tab a lot so there's certainly much less of a risk now than there was before that. The proxy shoudl cover the rest of the bases.
I tend to dowload all images in most emails anyway, especially from retailers if they're offering a coupon or promotion. It's a small change, but a good one.
