IBM on-premises vs. cloud
The IBM FlashSystem 840 storage can perform 1.1 million i/O per second. How big is that? Well, one comparison might be Amazon Web Services new I2 instance, which was introduced Nov. 14 at Re:Invent in Las Vegas. It's engineered with SSDs for high I/O throughput and can achieve 175,000 reads per second and 160,000 writes. Comparison admittedly isn't apples to apples.

Re: Good idea. What's the price?
Hybrid systems that use flash to the best effect are smart - balance cost and performance. All-SSD is the future, but not the near future. Also smart is making these modular. People worry about the flash memory wearing out before the HDD, so enabling IT to swap in a new SSD module should alleviate that concern.

Good idea. What's the price?
It's hard to differentiate your x86 servers from everyone else's.There's more and more white box manufacturing being done in China, elsewhere; it keeps nibbling into the server market. This is IBM's response, a highly engineered x86 system capable of mounting a huge amount of SSD storage. Good idea or bad? Pricing wasn't available at press time and that remains a major question.
