Re: Phablets
Phablets are cellphones, able to make voice calls over wireless networks. The Kindles may have 3G and may support VoIP or Skype, but it's not quite the same thing. Safe to say Kindles are just tablets and not phablets.

However, Juniper defines phablets as devices with screens 5.4 inches or larger. Other analyst firms put the measurement at or below 5 inches. As with everything, it's subjective...

Phablets
Will you consider the new Kindle Fire HDX 3G products to be phablets or are they more in the iPad range?

Re: Like holding a book up to your face
Even if it fit comfortably in my purse, I don't think I'd use it. I'd still want a tablet to get work done and a phone to make calls -- the inbetween size is too unweildy and awkward for both. Carrying two devices isn't that much of a hassle, IMO.

I think that's exactly right. I carry a purse, and I think a phablet in tandem with a Bluetooth headset makes a lot of sense.

I wonder if there's a gender-based bias for pocket-sized phones among men, who tend not to have handbags or the like to make carrying a phablet more convenient. Speaking for myself, I also consider "pocket-sized" a requirement for phones.

Like holding a book up to your face
Have you actually witnessed people talking into these things? They're like the clown shoes of mobile devices. Might as well ad phone capabilities to the 7-inch tablets. If it doesn't fit into a pocket, I'm just not going to think of it as a phone.

But what's a "FAD"?
Interesting that the basic claim here is that Phablets aren't a fad, for two reasons.

The first is because the cellular industry has had fads before - - remember the "Smallest!" fad?

The second part is that one generally find it difficult to determine when a fad ends.  For example, in the automotive realm, big tailfins were a fad ... and lasted 5-10 years, depending on which examples you want to count.
