This article has saved my bacon more than once but now after screen 4 I'm stuck on "examining the hard drive.....atapi...."etc at the bottom. This machine won't even boot from a ubcd4win cd so I'm assuming the hard drive is fried.
Any ideas?

re: Langa Letter: XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option
I'm trying to do this on a computer that I have been using for a long time but with a 9 month old 320 g drive. a virus is preventing me from using any programs or internet from c:even though it boots ok and the desktop looks fine. It just wont do anything. My screen 7 does not mention the repair option. It doesn not recognize a damaged xp.but it is telling me I have a either a full partition or damaged or not formated right and is telling me I have to format the partitian and that I have 131072mg left (which doesn't seem right) It only leads to distructive re install NO REPAIR OPTION. Do I just have the wrong set up disc? what now? .

I've used this procedure more than once since I read this article. It worked perfectly each time and instantly refreshed and speeded up my old XP system. I printed it out and have it on a shelf in my computer desk for easy access when needed. All it takes is the ability to follow very easily understood instructions. Probably the most useful thing I've ever read, ;)

Thanks, Fred!

Upgrading from Windows XP
I am trying to install Windows 7 on an older Dell XPS 400 that came with Windows XP installed. Unfortunately when I cleaned up the computer I erased and lost the pre-installed XP. The XP came pre-installed and I do not have a diskette to reinstall it. The reason I need to do this is because my Windows 7 program looks for it in order ti install over it. Can anyone think of a way to (a) get a copy of XP on diskette or (b) to get around this problem another way. Thanks for any help.

Non-destructive rebuild....
Like several others, I too do not get the 'R' option when selecting the existing installation. Why is this?
