In January, the company launched an iPhone app that gave travelers access to their online backups from anywhere the smartphone worked. Besides simply viewing and, if appropriate, downloading the files, the user can e-mail someone a file from within the Carbonite app without needing to download it first.
Now Carbonite has brought that capability to the BlackBerry. As with the iPhone, users can use the free app (downloadable from Carbonite.com/BlackBerry on the smartphone) to see their files in the same file and folder structure as they are on the backed-up computer, download and view files on the BlackBerry, and email files directly from the phone.
"Many Carbonite subscribers are small businesses who use the standard Carbonite product or Carbonite Pro," said Carbonite CEO David Friend. "Many of these business users rely on their BlackBerry smartphones and now will not only be able to access e-mail and the Web, but also all of their invaluable files they have backed up." The Carbonite app requires a BlackBerry with OS 4.6.1 and a screen resolution of 240x320 or better.
Carbonite has also upgraded its iPhone app -- also free -- to version 1.1. The main added feature is support for Carbonite Pro.
