The pace of new Labs for Gmail continues to flow unabated. The newest test feature for Gmail users to check out will show you a preview of the unread emails in your inbox while Gmail loads. This inbox preview will be most useful when you have a shaky Web connection.I access Gmail from less-than-awesome Internet connections all the time. Whether that be fighting for bandwidth in a press room at some trade show or struggling to connect to the Wi-Fi at a crowded Starbucks, the result is the same: slow browsing.

Staying on top of email is important for any busy professional, but when time is short and the Internet flaky, anything to speed things up is welcome. Enter Gmail's newest Lab: Inbox Preview.

Peter Balsiger, Software Engineer, writes, "We created a new feature in Gmail Labs called Inbox Preview. While Gmail is loading, a simple, static preview of your inbox with your ten most recent messages is displayed. Turn it on from the Labs tab under Settings, and if you're on a slow connection you'll know from the start if it's worth the wait."

I tested the feature out this morning. Just as Balsiger says, when I refreshed Gmail after enabling the Inbox Preview Lab, I saw a simple black-text-on-white-background shot of my inbox. Since I am on a fiber Internet line, it was there for but a blink of the eye. I am sure that it will last longer when I am connecting through less speedy means.

Check it out.
