It is a basic and simple assertion to make for several reasons. Apple announced earlier this week that Steve Jobs will kick off its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 7. The opening of the event is sure to come with news of the new iPhone. In fact, Steve Jobs has indicated via email that people "won't be disappointed" with the news to come out of WWDC.
Also, we've been informed that AT&T has already told employees that they are forbidden from taking any vacation in June. It has done this the last three years in a row during the launch of new iPhones.
Before The Boy Genius got wind of the launch timeframe, we'd already heard that the device might launch close to the June 7 announcement. That gives credence to the Genius' claim that the device might be available in mid June rather than late June.
So, did we learn anything new here? Not really.
Dam Frommer from Silicon Alley Insider, however, says that Apple needs to offer the iPhone via Verizon. Frommer's basic assertion is this, "The benefits of selling the iPhone at Verizon so completely outweigh every single hurdle that there is simply no way Apple can continue its AT&T exclusive for much longer."
His piece is insightful and makes some good arguments. My favorite is that Verizon customers have clearly indicated they won't leave their network for the iPhone. Since Verizon is the largest provider of cellular services, Apple could make gobs of money by offering the iPhone there, too.
Will Apple announce a Verizon-compatible iPhone on June 7? I doubt it.
