10 Apple Slip-Ups That Bruised Its Reputation

Apple is known for its consumer-friendly reputation, but this list proves Cameragate is only the latest in a long line of Apple foul-ups.

Cameragate -- Apple's admission in August that some of its iPhone 6 Plus smartphones were delivered with faulty iSight cameras -- is the latest in a long line of hiccups the company has experienced as the public gobbles up its increasingly complex gadgets.

While the problem appeared to affect a small number of iPhone 6 Plus users, the admission drew renewed attention to similar issues that have in the past bruised, if not tarnished, Apple's reputation as as a leader amongst consumer technology giants.

Cameragate follows similar monikers in recent Apple history, including Bendgate and the infamous Antennagate, as Steve Jobs referred to it, in which holding an iPhone 4 in a certain way would interfere with the phone's antenna and cause calls to drop (and Consumer Reports to not recommend the device).

There were also some marketing miscues involving entertainment icons, most notablly U2, that didn't earn "-gate" status but nonetheless struck some sour notes for the brand.

Along the way, Apple has dealt with other, more minor scandals, such as Batterygate and Scuffgate (yeah, we don't remember those brouhahas so well, either), and weathered a major storm with the disastrous rollout of Apple Maps, the company's supposed answer to Google Maps.

The mapping app was derided as inaccurate, ugly, and far below the standard Apple users had come to expect from the company. It led to a rare public apology from CEO Tim Cook and a corporate reshuffling.

From Bono and U2 to Bendgate and Batterygate -- not to mention all the minor and major scandals in between -- let's take a look at the slip-ups and missteps of one of the world's biggest and most valuable technology companies.

Consumer-friendly?
Since when has Apple been 'consumer-friendly"? One trip to the Apple store brings on some of the greatest frustrations in the world. Fact; Apple cares very little, to if anything at all, about what I think or how their device functions in the hands of the consumer. If they had, we would have better devices that are built to be consumber-friendly. I know some of you will immediatly have your backs up; but ponder this. Why does Apple NOT allow me to upload anything but a photo or video? What if I wanted to send a PDF to someone. Oh, we dont allow that. 

Why can we not have a microUSB slot for additional memory? You know why... money. They want you to buy more iCloud so you store stuff there or buy a bigger phone, which requires more iCloud.

Service? Take a functioning phone into the Apple store to have a cracked screen replaced. Two hours later they hand you a chunk of parts and walk away - never telling us the status. We realize a couple minutes later that there is no iOS installed. So we go back to the store and their response 'well there was a problem internally on the device and we cannot repair it'. So a 3 month old iPhone 6 is now junk and apparently the warranty does not cover internal problems - epsecially if their own service department trashes it. Come in with a working phone, leave with junk. No warranty and no replacement. This is their consumer-friendly attitude.

Most recent was my couple months old Beats headphones - now an Apple product. I am having them replaced, however they make the process so difficult I believe they hope you give up. About 60 minutes in the store to get the paperwork completed and yuou must have proof of purchase. If not, you lose. They know the serial numbers and when and where they were purchased, but they need the receipt when you take it for warranty or you lose.

 

Consumer-friendly... I have yet to see it.

Yes! Apple IS consumer freindly.  Your anecdotes not withstanding I take AAPL service any day next to IRS, Any US AIr Carrier, Comcast, my local HMO, or....  That Apple has its share of bumps in the road is a direct result of all those humans in the supply chain.  On the other hand - once they have married perfect deisgn with automated execution and delivery - who will still have jobs to buy them?

That's how all bussinesses are.

Once they get big (Failure is not on the horizon) they become ignorance, & don't care.

Haha. Spoken like an Apple lemming. In the four years I have been an Apple owner, they have yet to show once, even a glimmer, that they give a crap about me or my experience. If you think they care, you have not seen the wolf behind the Sheeps clothing. It's money first and experience last. Big business will NEVER care about you and your opinion. IMO.

Haha. Spoken like an Apple lemming. In the four years I have been an Apple owner, they have yet to show once, even a glimmer, that they give a crap about me or my experience. And you are using this no good, customer hating, money grubbing product for 4 years?  Have you no pride.  Drop this pile of bits for the open bosum of Mother Microsoft its Legendary Superior Software and an Intel lumptop.

U2 is the only one I'll stand behind. All other glitches are expected for the company that issues new/modified device every year. Indeed, I'd say the number is very low.

Haha. Yes. 4 years. Switched from my Blackberry. Business decision and all company has same devices. Did not want to go rogue and buy an Android. So I am stuck for now. As for Windows 10 devices; I will hold judgement until I can try one. From the people I know that have them (Win 8), they are neither thrilled or disgusted. It's a 'eh' device.

Are you kidding?  Move to "mother Microsoft"!!  Have you forgotten about Vista and other failed WIndows products. Microsoft has a gret reputation for releasing buggy software and having their paying customers become the beta test site. Their products are not intuitive like Apple products, are subject to hacks and malware and after 20 years of dealing with failed Microsoft products I have made a permanent switch to Apple.  Better tech support, better, user friendly products and GUI, faster boot, and compete integration thoughtout their entire product line, including previous releases. Microsoft does not even come close. Finally, if you don;t like to free U2 album, don't listen or delete it. I was not disturbed one bit.  I am not a [email protected] fan and haven't listened to the album nor have I deleted if.  I have sufficient storage to keep it.  Finally, Microsoft as the same access to your systems as Apple.  You Apple bashers are still iving in the 20th century.  Kepp driving the same old Chevy.  I'll take the Tesla or the new Jaguar F-Type.

Are you really telling the whole story?  I brought in a cracked iPhone 5s with Apple Care. Got a new phone.  Brought in a two year old Apple Bluetooth mouse from a MacPro purchase with Apple Care.  Got a new mouse in less than 5 minutes.  I have three operating iPads, the original, and iPad 2 and an iPad Air2.  All are operating perfectly.  My daugther is using the original, my fiancee the iPad 2, and I am using the iPad Air2.  No problems, no issues.  I have owned 3 iPhones.  All are still in service. They have been pushed down to other employees in my organiztion. I you take it out of the box, don;t mess with it, and use it as instructed, Apple products are better than anything I have owned using Microsoft operating systems.  Dell tech support was horrible  My Sony laptop NEVER worked right and their tech suport was a nightmare.  Three motherboards and now it is a $3,000 paperwieight. My 2008 Macbook Pro is still in use as a test system in my IT department.  My 2013 Macbook Pro has NEVER had an incident, nor has my 2014 MacPro other than a bad bluetooth mouse referenced above. Again, there is more to the story about your iPhone tah you are telling based upon my experience with Apple tech support.
