The Apple Watch is (finally, almost) here. Beginning April 10, anyone can view the device in Apple Stores and order one online. The pricey wearable won't ship until April 24, but the preorders are seeing enough demand that delivery times are slipping rapidly.

If you want an Apple Watch before summer, you'd better act quickly.

Apple began accepting preorders online at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time.

The company is selling three basic models -- Apple Watch, Watch Sport, and Watch Edition -- in two sizes and a variety of colors and band styles. The Sport model is the cheapest, and costs $349 for the 38mm size and $399 for the 42-mm size. According to Apple's website, demand was strong enough for the entry-level model to push shipping times overnight from April 24 all the way out to June.

The Apple Watch starts at $549, and runs all the way up to $1,099 for select models. Most models are showing shipping times of four to six weeks, but the high-end versions with stainless steel bands won't ship until July.

Yeah, you read that correctly: July.

The same goes for the luxury Watch Edition. Despite the price tags that range from $10,000 to $17,000, the Watch Edition won't ship until June or July, depending on the band.

Anyone looking for an Apple Watch with a delivery date of April 24 is flat out of luck. It's still viewable in stores, however, and consumers can pine away over the luxury wearable in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK, and the US. Apple is encouraging people to make appointments, so don't expect to walk in and simply touch one.

"We are excited to welcome customers and introduce them to Apple Watch, our most personal device yet," Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of retail and online stores, wrote in a statement. "Based on the tremendous interest from people visiting our stores, as well as the number of customers who have gone to the Apple Online Store to mark their favorite Apple Watch ahead of availability, we expect that strong customer demand will exceed our supply at launch. To provide the best experience and selection to as many customers as we can, we will be taking orders for Apple Watch exclusively online during the initial launch period."

Is the Apple Watch worth all the hype? Early reviews of the smartwatch were mixed.

Most reviewers said it is the best smartwatch yet, with the caveat that smartwatches haven't really taken off as a category. It does a lot, but is sometimes slow. The battery barely lasts all day, and third-party apps aren't yet plentiful enough to enjoy.

If you're an Android user, feel free to order one of the half-dozen different Android Wear smartwatches from Google any time. Prices range from $150 to $350, and shipping times are generally only a couple of days.

not getting the reasoning
I'm still not quite getting the apple smartwatch thing. I used to wear a watch everyday which I eventually replaced with a fitbit that had a clock on it. I use my phone to tell me what time it is if I need to know. I understand the idea of a fitness band with a clock function and even little alarms to help you through your day, but it's rare I'd need a watch that integrates with my phone, since my phone is usually within arm's reach, you know the same arm where the watch would go. If anyone here has gotten one, what was your reasoning behind the purchase?

How nice of you to read my comment. :) What you probably mean is that Apple products are even better because they are a joyful source of entertainment for the other half of the office who are stuck with their super boring devices, right? :D Just wait until the Apple Watches populate half of the office as well. 

The truth about any issues you can have in the office with Macs, iPads, and iPhones is simply that their users make them up, so the other half of the office don't feel bad about having daily issues with their Android and PC thingies. Yes, that considerate they are. :) 

Send a nice hello to the half of your office who exclusively use Apple devices.

"apple products just work" is a running joke in our office as 1/2 of the staff use apple technology exclusively and the other half are a mix of pc and android.... more often than not we have issues with macs, ipads and iphones as they're not geared for heavy use...


stick to your toys if you find other platforms too overwhelming

sorry for the tone its just a big deal on a daily basis here.

Have you ever thought that people maybe buy Apple products because Apple products simply work and ever have all the annoying problems non-Apple products constantly have? 

I'll tell you why I buy Apple products only: Because they work and will always work until the day I upgrade them. They have served me in a way no non-Apple product ever did. I don't care about Apple clubs, or Apple piles. My only interest is to have products that work without giving me constant problems. I love the design, the OS, the thought and detail put into them, which really shows when you know and have used the products, and everything about them. That's why I buy Apple products. I only regret I didn't start to do it before. I started buying Apple products when I got enough of wasting money on PCs and Windows.

Apple probably never saw itself as a "service" company -- always products which do things or allow people to do things. ALthough that's not true of iTunes -- clearly a service.

Maybe that's one of the reasons they lost the battle for the workplace in the 1990s  to PCs/MSFT. Will be interesting to see what the change is now, if any
