Customers may now try the Apple Watch on in stores, but they will need to place orders online.

Great points @jastroff. I wonder if the Apple watch is the result of "Product Orientation" or "Market Orientation."

Most probably, the first iPhones that were introduced to the world were based around product orientation and it worked wonderfully. However, the market has changed a lot during the time.

I would expect that a large firm such as, Apple, can maintain a healthy supply of a product that is not in high demand at the market. However, a perceived shortage of supply has been known to increase demand for a product -- it will be interesting to keep an eye on the Apple watch.

Right there  are no killer apps for the watch. Also it has to be tethered to the iPhone which is an issue. The Apple marketers are trying to tout the health apps for the watch but really, are they any better than the ones already out there for FitBit? And why spend exhorbitant amounts of money on a watch that really is meant for more formal wear when you can buy a FitBit which can be used in a gym?

Tablets are useful up to a point but will not replace laptops for a long time, if ever. To me the iPad is more of an entertainment center that i have used whilst travelling. But it is not suitable for work at all.

Hi Susan,

You hit it on the head when you say the smart watch is a compliment to the smart phone at the end of the day. Totally agree with that. However Apple is marketing the watch in such a way as to suggest it is a high end fashion device. Look at the upscale bands, gold cases and buckles, sapphire crystals. These items are indeed only found on IWC, Rolex, Patek Phillipe, etc. watchs. As are the high end prices.

I am sure there will be people buying the watch as their high end dress watch who will one day realize that they have to charge the watch every day; have apps that are more novelty items; find that each update slows the watch down further. One day their $1000+ watch will cease to work with their current phone. People will not be happy. It won't matter to the folks who can throw away that kind of money but it will to the Average Joe.

That is why I think the watch sale patterns will follow the iPad's. People do not refresh their iPads annually or even bi annually for the same type of reason. And i think the watch will see an even longer "churn". In fact it would not surprise me to see some "one and dones" with the watch.

People turnover their phones much more frequently because of its use and there is a good secondary market. That hasn't happened with the iPads yet and I don't think it will happen with the watch. I like the watch and would like to get one. But I don't think i will get version 1.0 and I will certainly not fork over $1000 for the model i like-even if I won Powerball. I'm that cheap!!!

I agree with your categories, especially the conspicuous consumption one. I think there will be fair amount of gold watches sold just because it will be the "in thing" to have. That crowd does not care about how Apple's gold is "harder and purer" than ordinary gold or that the watch has over 1000 face configurations available. I'm surprised Apple hasn't made any avaiable to celebrities yet.

Rarely people keep their iPhones for more than two years, in average. One of the reasons is that after a while they don't support the lastest iOS updates, or newest apps, which is logical. I really don't see why it should be different with the Apple Watch, which is a complement of the iPhone at the end of the day. 

Also, a lot of people sell their phones after little more than a year, or two years to buy a new one. By doing that, they get part of their investment back which they use to buy the next iPhone. It will be exactly the same with the Apple Watch. All devices become obsolete after a while and you really need to replace them.

The 38mm must be the ones you are looking for. Depending on the band you choose they look nice and feminine in all the Apple Watch videos. They also explain all what you can do with them. Are you planning to buy one? :)

All good points. If I had to categorize buyers today, it would be a) people who are early adopters and who want to build/develop utility for their companies, understand the potential uses of the product, etc. b) people who just have to have the latest thing (also early adopters but for no reason) and c) people who fall under what Thorstein Veblen called "conspicuous consumption" -- not a practical buy, so to speak. Also close to early adopters with no reason to buy

I don't see the point of the Apple Watch. What I am waiting for is true utility for a platform like this.

Right now, there isn't a killer use case for smartwatches. I think on some level this is one reason why tablets are in a slump – people don't truly need them in their everyday lives, they are more like toys.

The watch itself is only one style. It just comes in either aluminum, stainless or gold cases. It is the band that makes the different versions. Some of the bands are very nice-then again i am speaking as a guy. My favourite is the stainless steel link one but i am not paying $1000 for an Apple Watch. One of my friends ordered the black stainless band for $1100. Again very nice but to me it is just too much money on a first version tech item.
