At the same time, the Spain-based venture said it is the largest Wi-Fi community in the world with more than 320,000 members and 120,000 Wi-Fi access points. FON noted that it had added 60,000 access points in the past 60 days alone.
FON's "Foneros" -- its users -- share their home Wi-Fi access points with others in the FON community. Foneros can use FON access points worldwide wherever they find another Fonero with a Wi-Fi access point.
In the past year, FON has sponsored promotions in San Francisco and New York City, for instance, to sign up Foneros. In the United States, Skype and PayPal -- both units of eBay -- have been prominent FON partners.
In addition to Google and Skype, FON's investors include Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital. FON said it will reveal the identity of its latest investors at a later date.
