Sybase Unveils New Mobility Platform, Software

The company announced a host of products that aim to unwire the enterprise.
At the TechWave 2008 Conference in Las Vegas, Sybase announced a host of new products to help enterprises go mobile.

Sybase unveiled its Unwired Platform, the company's next-generation architecture for designing and deploying mobile enterprise applications. It will enable companies to develop mobile apps that can be strategically deployed as opposed to a tactical or siloed approach.

This could be an increasingly important factor, as a recent Gartner study said that 50% of enterprises will be adopting a mobile platform capable of supporting multiple applications, managing devices, and securing data and transport.

"We're seeing customer and partner demand for a complete, tightly integrated platform that provides true enterprise value by mobilizing business processes and applications," said John Chen, chairman, CEO, and president of Sybase, in a statement. "This is our Unwired Enterprise vision -- unleashing the power of information anywhere, at any time, from the data center right to the mobile edge including employees and end customers."

The Unwired Platform integrates with existing enterprise applications and many common developer tools, the company said. It is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

Sybase also announced Afaria 6.0 for mobile device management and security. The company said this upgrade can help reduce costs with its group and role-based policies, over-the-air standards-based device provisioning, local password recovery, and more.

Afaria also beefs up network and device security with a relay service architecture and mobile device port controls, according to Sybase. It is expected to be available at the end of the third quarter.

The company also unveiled SQL iAnywhere version 11 and emphasized its mobile features. The latest version includes support for BlackBerry handsets, features remote full-text search, and has background synchronization. It is available now.
