If the rumor mill is accurate, Verizon will flip the switch turning on their tiered data plans. It isn't going to be a simple set of fees and amounts to remember either, especially if you have more than one device, but some plans could wind up saving some people quite a bit of money annually.Engadget posted the information, which for now only covers 3G data plans. 4G may have a different structure. So, what will you pay? Well, it depends on your device:
Smartphones
$15 for 150MB and a 10¢ per MB overage rate
$29.99 for unlimited data.
For those that primarily use their phone for email, the $15 plan may save them $180 per year over their current unlimited smartphone plan.
iPad with MiFi
$20 for 1GB of data
$35 for 3GB of data
$50 for 5GB of data
$80 for 10GB of data
Overages will be charged at $10 per GB of data
Stand-alone MiFi, Fivespot and netbooks and notebooks with integrated 3G modems
$50 for 5GB of data
$80 for 10GB of data
The MiFi and Fivespot can also opt for the $35 plan for 3GB of data as part of a 90 day promo
Overages will be charged at $10 per GB of data
Feature phones
$1.99 pay as you go plan. No one knows yet of that is a daily rate or an entry fee to a cents per MB plan
$15 for 150MB of data
$29.99 for unlimited data
USB Modems
$39.99 for 250MB of data
$59.99 for 5GB of data
These rates are unchanged. The MiFi is currently part of this plan but will move to the more appealing rates listed above.
Based on these new rates, there are a few changes I'd like to make to my plan, namely going from the current $59.99 MiFi plan for 5GB the new $50 plan for the same amount of data. I don't yet know if I can just switch it though without re-upping for another year or so. See any changes here that might save you money, or are you considering increasing your data allowance at these more attractive prices? I am assuming, of course, that you won't be force to make any changes unless you change devices.
