I'm not delusional. I don't expect the letter to actually change Microsoft policy. But I thought it was important to lay out the reasons why many Windows Vista users are feeling frustrated and ripped off by what they see as Microsoft's selfishness.
Vista users are Microsoft's best customers. They bought Microsoft's Vista hype, but are now expected to pay all over again to get the OS that Vista should have been all along.
Windows XP users, on the other hand, are being rewarded for staying away from Vista by getting the same upgrade pricing that Vista buyers get.
It's just not right. And the only way to make it right is for Microsoft to do the right thing and offer Vista users free upgrades to the equivalent version of Windows 7.
Sure, free upgrades from Vista will cost Microsoft millions in lost revenues -- but not as many millions as it would have had Vista been a real success.
More importantly, Microsoft can afford it. In the long run, Vista upgrades will be a small portion of overall Windows 7 sales. And by recognizing and rewarding its most loyal customers, Microsoft could reap a public relations windfall while finally outdoing rivals Apple and Google. Heck, it probably wouldn't be long before Microsoft made it all back, and more.
