The latest rumors surrounding Windows Mobile have nothing to do with the platform itself but the internal division at Microsoft that is responsible for it. The rumor is the Windows Mobile division would be brought under control of the group responsible for Windows.I'll admit, the links are rather tenuous, but the idea itself raises some interesting possibilities. The Register has been following a thread at the Mini-Microsoft blog that has over 800 comments so far. The key comment is about halfway through the thread on January 21 at 7:27am. The comment is:

Of course, the quote is anonymous. In fact, the entire blog is anonymous, so treat the rumor with a healthy dose of skepticism. It does make sense though. I never understood why WinMo was moved to the same group that did X-Box. The X-Box and Windows Mobile have nothing in common. There may be some overlap with customers, but there is far more likely to be overlap with Windows and WinMo customers. The marketing strategy for WinMo and X-Box would be totally different as well.

Another good reason for the move would be after Vista, the Windows group showed they could turn things around. Windows 7 has been nothing short of a spectacular hit. Given the current position of WinMo in the market place today, it could stand to have a similar blowout turnaround performance in the near future.
