Independent storage vendor MTI Technology Corp. has been able to undersell market leader EMC Corp. and win some deals. But since the cost of a storage system isn't the deal breaker it once was, MTI is hoping its new Vivant V25 will give companies more incentive to choose its product.
The V25 is much smaller than a comparable system from EMC, and it has 8 Fibre Channel paths for twice the input/output of its V20 predecessor. The system will store more than 3 terabytes of data in a single cabinet. MTI will sell the V25 as an integrated storage area network with Fibre Channel switches, management services tools, and support services for less than $400,000.
David Scholten, senior IT analyst at Smiths Industries Aerospace's information management systems division in Grand Rapids, Mich., isn't concerned about the small footprint of the V25 because he doesn't pay a lot for floor space. Scholten uses a V20, but he will need more storage soon and plans to look at MTI's new product because of the way the company designs and sells a system. "We're savvy with the technology, and the MTI architecture lets us handle all the administration ourselves if we wish," Scholten says.
Even if EMC cuts its prices, MTI hopes the V25 will still be attractive to any IT exec who's running out of data center floor space or is paying for space at a co-hosting site. Aberdeen Group analyst Dan Tanner says MTI's service and support services can continue to win Unix server customers. Says Tanner, "MTI will come on site and support everything but the application servers."
