Staff & Line SA has introduced a desktop-asset inventory service through its EasyVista.com. PC Inventory Service helps small and midsize companies quickly and inexpensively implement a system for tracking PC assets, including hardware, software, applications, and configurations.
PC Inventory Service is available in two levels-basic and premium. There's no charge for the basic service, through which IT administrators receive a dozen E-mailed reports in Adobe Acrobat PDF format on a monthly, quarterly, or bi-annual basis. These reports include information about the number of PCs, types, and versions of software running on these PCs, free disk space, missing PCs, and duplicate software installations, computer names, and IP addresses.
The premium service provides additional PC-specific information such as computer and log-on name, IP and MAC address, BIOS, OS, CPU, hard-drive size, and screen resolution for a price of $5 per PC per month. EasyVista.com sends the premium service information in Microsoft Excel format via E-mail so the information can be distributed or imported into other applications.
EasyVista.com is likely to garner attention in a small and midsize business market that hasn't been well-served in the past by expensive asset management and inventory applications, says Bob McCullough, an analyst with Hurwitz Group. In addition to the basic service being free, McCullough points out that service can be implemented without downloading any software to the client devices being analyzed.
McCullough says, "Although users won't get the volume or detail of data they would get with a software package (such as those from Computer Associates or Microsoft)," the EasyVista.com service allows the small and midsize market to gain access to data about their desktops without a large up-front investment or complicated product implementation.
